Navien NPE-240A2 in practice
The NPE-240A2 is Navien's flagship A2 tankless model and one of the most common Navien units in Metro Vancouver tankless work. Its capacity is published as flow at three temperature rises rather than one maximum: 11.2 GPM (42.4 L/min) at a 35 °F rise, 8.7 GPM at 45 °F, and 5.6 GPM at 67 °F. Because Metro Vancouver's winter incoming water can sit below 8 °C, reaching 49 °C is roughly a 40 °C (72 °F) rise, and the flow figures at and above a 45 °F rise are the ones a sizing assessment uses.
The unit is wall-hung, vents as a forced-draft direct vent in 2 in or 3 in PVC-family or approved stainless/BH pipe with zero clearance to combustibles, and runs on 120 V. Its stainless steel primary and secondary heat exchangers are the platform's corrosion story, and recirculation is supported through Navien's ComfortFlow configuration with an external pump or crossover accessory. Hot water and scalding
- Water above 49 °C at a tap can scald in seconds, and children and older adults are at most risk. BC's plumbing code limits shower and bathtub water to 49 °C.
- Storage tanks are normally kept hotter (Health Canada advises 60 °C) to limit Legionella growth, with a thermostatic mixing valve tempering the water to the fixtures.
- Never bypass or remove a mixing valve, thermostat or high-limit control to get hotter water.
