Bradford White RG250H6N in practice
The RG250H6N is the smallest of the high-input atmospheric family, pairing a 48 US gallon tank with a 65,000 BTU/h burner for a 106 US gallon (401 L) first-hour rating, well above the standard 48-gallon RG250L6N's 77. It is also the only high-input model built on the Defender Safety System flammable-vapour-ignition-resistant platform, per the note on the Canadian sheet, and it carries the familiar 22 in (559 mm) jacket and 3" or 4" draft-hood heritage of the standard line.
Like every model in this family it carries 3/4 in side connections for space heating, is certified to ANSI Z21.10.1, and vents by natural draft through a 4 in draft hood with no external electricity. UEF 0.63 matches the standard 50-gallon tall tank. Whether CANRO stocks this model for a given job is confirmed at consultation.
Best suited to
- Homes that want a high first-hour rating from a tank under 50 US gal nominal
- Potable plus space-heating applications where a 48 US gal tank and high recovery both fit
- Rooms where the Defender FVIR flammable-vapour resistance matters
Limitations to know
- 4 in vent connection only; chimney or B-vent must accept a 4 in draft hood
- Input of 65,000 BTU/h needs a gas supply line sized for it (many tank lines are not)
- UEF 0.63 is below ENERGY STAR
- Warranty excludes labour and anode consumption; anode inspection every 2 years is required

Maintenance the manufacturer specifies
- Inspect the anode rod every 2 years and replace when depleted; more often with softened water (manual, Maintenance item 9).
- Operate the T&P relief valve at least once a year to check it lifts and reseats without leaking (item 6).
- Drain about a gallon monthly to remove sediment (item 7); annual inspection by a qualified technician.
- Inspect the vent system at least once a year; check burner flames twice a year (items 10 and 4).

Services
Hot water and scalding
- Water above 49 °C at a tap can scald in seconds, and children and older adults are at most risk. BC's plumbing code limits shower and bathtub water to 49 °C.
- Storage tanks are normally kept hotter (Health Canada advises 60 °C) to limit Legionella growth, with a thermostatic mixing valve tempering the water to the fixtures.
- Never bypass or remove a mixing valve, thermostat or high-limit control to get hotter water.
Official guidance: Government of Canada on water temperature and scalds and HealthLinkBC.
Frequently asked questions
Is the RG250H6N sold in Canada?
Yes. It is listed on Bradford White's Canadian residential gas page and on Canadian spec sheet C1108. Bradford White sells only through wholesalers, so it is supplied and installed by contractors such as CANRO.
Is the RG250H6N a Defender FVIR tank?
Yes. The Canadian sheet notes the Defender Safety System as applying to the RG250H6N only within the high-input family, so it is the model to choose where flammable-vapour resistance is wanted.
What does the H stand for?
The high-input form: a 65,000 BTU/h burner on a 48 US gallon tank, giving a 106 US gallon first-hour rating and side space-heating connections. The standard-input 48-gallon lowboy RG250L6N uses 40,000 BTU/h.
