Giant UG50-62 power-vent

The Giant UG50-62 is the high-input 50-gallon member of Giant's Canadian power-vent residential gas storage line, at 50 US gallons (189 L) with a 62,000 BTU/h input on both natural gas and propane. Unlike an atmospheric tank, a power-vent model draws combustion air from inside the home and uses a motorized blower to force the exhaust outside through 2 in, 3 in or 4 in ULC S636 PVC, CPVC or polypropylene pipe up to 180 equivalent feet, horizontally or vertically, so it does not need a chimney. Giant lists a 3-position rotatable blower for flexible installation, a TankSaver design, a flammable-vapour sensor that shuts the unit down, an air-intake snorkel, a glass-lined inner tank, a magnesium anode and an electronic gas control valve with self-diagnostic capability.

Giant's page gives storage capacity and input but does not publish a first-hour rating, recovery rate, energy factor or dimensions for this model, so WaterHeating.ca does not state those figures. The published warranty is 6 years against inner tank leakage and 6 years on component parts from the date of installation, with conditions in the owner's manual. The 3/4 in side taps on the 50-62 high-input model suit combination applications.

A power-vent unit needs a 120 V supply for the blower and a sealed side-wall vent route, so it is the family to consider where no usable chimney exists or a mechanical room is sealed.
