The RG2F40S6N is the 40-gallon member of the fan-assist Defender line, built for the house with a usable but weak chimney: exhaust still leaves through a 3 in or 4 in draft diverter into the flue, while a high-efficiency blower pulls the gases through a restricted baffle, which is what lets the family reach higher efficiency figures than the plain atmospheric tanks.
It is a Defender Safety System flammable-vapour-ignition-resistant tank with the ICON electronic control and no standing pilot, which is why its medium-draw UEF reaches 0.70 against 0.64 for the plain atmospheric RG240T6N at the same capacity. The blower and control need 120 VAC, so hot water stops during an outage. Inputs are 38,000 BTU/h on natural gas and propane. Hot water and scalding
- Water above 49 °C at a tap can scald in seconds, and children and older adults are at most risk. BC's plumbing code limits shower and bathtub water to 49 °C.

Why would I choose fan assist over a power vent?
Fan assist keeps the chimney and the draft-hood installation, adding a blower to help the draft; a power vent abandons the chimney for plastic pipe to a wall. If the flue is in good shape but weak, fan assist is the smaller change.
Can the RG2F40S6N run on propane?
The propane version is the RG2F40S6X with the same 38,000 BTU/h input per the Canadian sheet. Order the correct fuel version; fuel conversion is not a field procedure.
