Bradford White RE2HP5010 in practice

The RE2HP5010 is the 50-gallon member of the AeroTherm Series G2, Bradford White's current Canadian hybrid heat-pump line. A heat pump on top of the tank draws heat from the surrounding air while 4,000 W and 3,000 W elements cover peaks, and the five operating modes trade recovery speed against electricity use: the factory Hybrid Standard mode delivered the sheet's 65 US gallon (246 L) first-hour rating on the test basis the sheet notes.

The heat pump runs only in 3–49 °C ambient air and the unit falls back to the elements outside that range, so siting inside the conditioned space or ducting air to it is part of the installation. It cools and dehumidifies the room, needs a condensate drain and a 240 V circuit, and rates UEF 3.89 per AHRI. BC heat-pump water heater rebates currently require replacing an existing electric tank. Whether CANRO stocks this model for a given job is confirmed at consultation.

  • Clean the top-mounted washable air filter when the unit alerts; the sheet notes an automatic alert.
  • Inspect the anode rod every 2 years and replace when depleted; more often with softened water.
  • Operate the T&P relief valve at least once a year to check it lifts and reseats without leaking.
  • Check the condensate drain for flow and blockage at least once a year; annual technician inspection.

Hot water and scalding

  1. Water above 49 °C at a tap can scald in seconds, and children and older adults are at most risk. BC's plumbing code limits shower and bathtub water to 49 °C.
  2. Storage tanks are normally kept hotter (Health Canada advises 60 °C) to limit Legionella growth, with a thermostatic mixing valve tempering the water to the fixtures.
  3. Never bypass or remove a mixing valve, thermostat or high-limit control to get hotter water.

Frequently asked questions

Is the RE2HP5010 sold in Canada?

Yes. The AeroTherm G2 family is listed on Bradford White's Canadian heat-pump range and on Canadian spec sheet C1903. Bradford White sells only through wholesalers, so it is supplied and installed by contractors such as CANRO.

What does UEF 3.89 mean?

It is the Uniform Energy Factor per the AHRI listing the sheet cites, under the hybrid test basis the sheet notes. It is an efficiency rating well above resistance electric tanks, but the draw pattern is not printed on the sheet, so it should not be compared across patterns.

Can this unit replace my gas tank?

Physically, where a 240 V circuit, air volume and a condensate drain exist. Current FortisBC and BC Hydro rebates for heat-pump water heaters require an existing electric tank, so a gas-to-heat-pump switch is assessed on its own merits.
