What actually separates them

The capacities are identical, so this is purely a burner and recovery comparison. Both store 40 US gallons (151 L) nominal and 38 US gallons (144 L) rated, and both carry the same draft-hood venting, 3/4 in NPT water connections, 1/2 in gas connection and millivolt control with no electricity required.
