Rinnai RX199iN

The Rinnai RX199iN is Rinnai's current flagship indoor condensing natural gas tankless water heater in Canada: 15,000–199,000 BTU/h, UEF 0.98, up to 11.1 GPM (42 L/min) maximum flow at an unstated rise, Wi-Fi control and ENERGY STAR marked on rinnai.ca. It is the RX successor to the RU199iN.

Rinnai RX199iN in practice

The RX199iN is the model Rinnai Canada leads its residential tankless listing with, the successor platform to the RU199iN. Its UEF 0.98 and 11.1 GPM (42 L/min) maximum flow are the marketing figures; as with every Rinnai tankless unit, the deliverable flow falls as the temperature rise grows, and the winter rise in Metro Vancouver (roughly 40 °C to a 49 °C shower) is the figure a sizing assessment uses from the flow tables in manual 100000839.

The platform adds Wi-Fi control, is certified SCAQMD ultra-low-NOx, and is marked ENERGY STAR on the Canadian product page. Installation follows the condensing-tankless pattern: PVC, CPVC or polypropylene venting per the manual and Rinnai's separate common-venting instructions, a 3/4 in gas connection, a condensate drain and 120 V power. Recirculation uses Rinnai's controls with an external pump; the RXP199iN version carries the pump built in. Whether CANRO stocks this model for a given job is confirmed at consultation.

Best suited to

  • Homes converting from a tank who want the current Rinnai flagship and its Wi-Fi controls
  • Households with sequential demand where UEF 0.98 and ENERGY STAR status matter
  • Buyers comparing the RU199iN's successor before ordering the older platform

Limitations to know

  • Maximum flow is quoted without a temperature rise; winter delivery at a 40 °C rise is far lower
  • Requires 120 V power; no hot water during an outage
  • Needs sealed PVC-family venting, a condensate drain and a gas supply sized for 199,000 BTU/h
  • Annual descaling is a warranty condition; lime damage is excluded

Recirculation-capable with Rinnai's controls and an external pump (dedicated return line or crossover valve); the RXP199iN carries the pump built in. Recirculation makes hot water quicker at the tap, not instant, and adds gas use.

Manuals

Maintenance the manufacturer specifies

  • Flush (descale) the heat exchanger at least once a year using the included isolation valves; Rinnai states lime damage is not covered by warranty and hard water needs more frequent flushing.
  • Set the Service Soon reminder (parameter 03: 0.5, 1 or 2 years) so the display prompts the next flush.
  • Clean the cold-water inlet filter screen periodically.
  • Register within 90 days of installation to keep the 5-year labour warranty; otherwise labour defaults to 1 year.

Services

Hot water and scalding

  1. Water above 49 °C at a tap can scald in seconds, and children and older adults are at most risk. BC's plumbing code limits shower and bathtub water to 49 °C.
  2. Storage tanks are normally kept hotter (Health Canada advises 60 °C) to limit Legionella growth, with a thermostatic mixing valve tempering the water to the fixtures.
  3. Never bypass or remove a mixing valve, thermostat or high-limit control to get hotter water.

Official guidance: Government of Canada on water temperature and scalds and HealthLinkBC.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the RX199iN and the RU199iN?

The RX199iN is the current platform: UEF 0.98 against the RU's 0.95, a taller cabinet (30.11 in against 26.4 in), Wi-Fi capability and ENERGY STAR marking on rinnai.ca, at the same 199,000 BTU/h input class.

Is the RX199iN sold in Canada?

Yes. It has a live product page on rinnai.ca and leads Rinnai Canada's tankless listing as of the verification date.

Does the RX199iN have a built-in recirculation pump?

No. It is recirculation-capable with an external pump; the RXP199iN is the version with the pump built in.
