If you smell gas
- Stop what you are doing. Do not use phones, switches, matches or anything that can spark inside.
- Go outside and leave the door open behind you.
- Call the FortisBC 24-hour emergency line at 1-800-663-9911 or dial 911.

If the water heater is leaking
- Close the cold-water shut-off valve on the pipe feeding the heater, if you can reach it safely.
- Gas unit: turn the gas control to OFF. Electric unit: switch off its breaker. Do not touch electrical parts while standing in water.
- Do not cap or plug the relief-valve discharge pipe, even if that is where the water is coming from.
A leaking tank body cannot be repaired; a dripping relief valve or fitting often can. Call CANRO with a description of where the water appears.
About this service
A tank-body leak cannot be repaired: the lining and steel have failed, and sealing compounds fail under temperature and pressure. If the tank is leaking, close the cold-water shut-off and turn the gas control to OFF or the breaker off if you can do so safely, then call. The technician confirms the source (a drip from a fitting or relief valve is often repairable; a tank-body leak is not) and quotes the replacement with a free written estimate.
