Bradford White publishes a 75 US gallon (284 L) first-hour rating and 43 US gal/h recovery at a 90 °F (50 °C) rise. Giant's Canadian page states the 40 US gallon capacity and the 40,000 BTU/h input but does not publish a first-hour rating, recovery rate, energy factor or dimensions for the UG40, so those cells stay blank here rather than being estimated.
Efficiency is where the published gap shows. Bradford White lists UEF 0.64 under the medium-draw test and states the model is not ENERGY STAR, since version 5.0 requires UEF 0.81 for gas storage tanks of this size. Giant does not publish an energy factor or UEF for the UG40, so WaterHeating.ca states none; a Giant proposal is sized on the demand assessment, not on a brochure number.
Venting and power are the same class. Both vent by natural draft into a chimney or B-vent and draw combustion air from the room, and neither needs a standing electrical supply: Giant lists a thermopile pilot with a piezoelectric push-button igniter, and Bradford White uses a millivolt control powered by the pilot thermopile. Both therefore keep heating during a power outage, unlike a power-vent or tankless unit.
Fuel and warranty differ in detail. Giant lists the UG40 at the same 40,000 BTU/h input for natural gas and propane, while Bradford White's propane version, the RG240T6X, is 36,000 BTU/h with lower recovery; on either model the correct fuel version is ordered, because field conversion is not a procedure. Giant states a 6-year inner-tank and 6-year parts warranty from the date of installation, and Bradford White lists a 10-year-warranty variant of the same tank, the RG240T10N. The warranty sheet for the exact unit governs. Whether CANRO supplies either model for a given job is confirmed at consultation, and no price is published here.
